Paper Stocks

Paper stocks and print options for boxes, frames and loose prints

We choose our paper stocks for their quality, durability, appearance, and suitability for particular products.

Each stock's unique characteristics — e.g. texured or smooth, lustre or matt — will affect the look you're after. So will the printing technology it uses — Offset, Fine Art (inkjet) or True Photographic (silver halide). It's also important to choose an option that's suitable for the product you want to create — a book, frame or box of matted prints for example. This page discusses all those factors

New customers: We recommend purchasing our paper samplers. The cost is deductible against your first order for frames or boxes. Please email us if you have questions.

Help us to help you! We want to deliver predictable, top quality printing, but we're only as good as the files you send us. No printing device can replicate the range of colours on your computer, and we can't know what those colours are unless you're working with a calibrated screen in controlled lighting. Please soft proof your images and supply them with the Adobe 98 ICC profile. If in doubt please ask us to colour correct your files before printing.

Traditional Photo Prints

Traditional Photo Prints are printed using light-sensitive paper and silver-based chemistry, the Silver Halide technology that's been constantly refined for more than a hundred years.

True photographic prints offer constant colour under different light sources; unmatched longevity — no noticeable colour change after 100 years (in indirect light) or 200 years (in albums); and durability. Because images are embedded in the paper they're ideal for loose prints, boxes and albums, where the prints are subject to handling. We offer three types:

Lustre:  Premier Lustre paper produces accurate skin tones, with a neutral tone scale from highlights to shadows - ideal for portrait prints. Lustre offers bold rich blacks, clean whites and an increased colour gamut for stronger, brighter, more vibrant colours. Available in all our box, frame and loose print products, as well as in albums.

Metallic: Premier Metallic paper has a distinctive, eye catching metallic look. Colours jump off the paper with a clean, clear vibrancy. This paper uses a patented combination of film and laminate layers resulting in striking three-dimensional images. It offers natural-looking skin tones, sharp details, and beautifully-saturated colours. Resistant to tearing and curling without any additional lamination but not as resistant to handling as Lustre. Not available in albums — metallic prints are offered only as loose or matted prints and in frames. (We recommend that they always be matted or framed as protection.)

Glossy: Gloss Endura Premier paper has the same characteristics as the Lustre surface, but gloss offers clean sharp text, bold, rich blacks and clean looking whites. Not available in albums — offered only as loose prints in a limited range of sizes. Used mainly by group photographers (schools, teams etc).

Six-colour offset printing

We offer three distinctive stocks for 6-colour offset printing.

Unlike other technologies offset printing allows paper to be printed both sides, making it ideal for Photobooks. It can also be used on a variety of paper stocks, making it possible to get the "fine art" or "water colour" look of inkjet printing, but with a more durable product and at a more appealing price. All our stocks are pH-buffered to ensure pages and prints remain acid-free over a lifetime.

Tintoretto is a felt-marked art stock with a distinct watercolour texture on both surfaces. Tintoretto has a matt finish, is of exceptional quality and, like our other offset stocks, specifically formulated for our digital-offset press.

Matt has a deep matt finish like Tintoretto, the difference being that the surface is only softly textured, almost smooth. Colours are appealingly subdued, with somehat less contrast than true photographic prints.

Satin: has a smooth surface with a slight sheen and excellent colour resolution, perfect for photographic imagery.

Offset printing is mainly used in books and albums, but also in boxes for matted prints.

Fine Art Printing

Conservation quality, smooth or textured

Our Fine Art products are inkjet printed and deliver beautiful images with a somewhat wider colour gamut than other technologies. Their only downsides are a higher price, and a more delicate finished product than either offset or traditional photographic printing (which we recommend where the printed images will be subject to handling, as with loose prints).

Fine Art prints will give spectacular results for many years provided they are on a photo-friendly stock (all ours are conservation quality), have UV protection, and are out of direct sunlight.

100% Cotton rag

Our mould-made, 100% cotton rag papers are crafted specifically to meet the needs of demanding photographers who value conservation-standard inkjet prints. Available in two surfaces, Textured and Smooth. Smooth Cotton Rag is the perfect choice for crisp detail, Textured Cotton Rag for its expressive Fine Art surface.

Cotton Rag Fine Art prints are available in sizes from 10x8" (25x20cm) up to 60x40" (152x102cm). Offered as loose prints, and in frames and boxes only; not available in books and albums.
